Root Canals & Endodontics
The purpose of the root canal treatment is to preserve the tooth instead of extracting it.
A root canal treatment is a procedure that needs to be performed when a tooth has been irreversibly affected by infection (decay) or trauma or is acutely painful, due to irreversible inflammation of the soft tissues that are inside the tooth’s hard outer shell.
The aim is to access the tooth’s complex root canal system and use advanced techniques and instruments to widen, disinfect and consequently seal the tooth as best as possible, thus minimising the chance of it becoming re-infected.
Most teeth have got a good chance to recover and stay in your mouth for a long time after a root canal treatment. However, a root filled tooth is more prone to break, so it will usually need some form of mechanical protection, such as an overlay or a crown.
