Restorative Dentistry
Restorative dentistry is the term used to refer to replacing missing or rebuilding damaged teeth. Common restorative options are fillings, inlays, onlays, crowns and bridgework. Implants also come under this category, but they are explained under the ‘’Implants’’ section.
Fillings
The most common way to treat broken or decayed teeth; the dentist removes the decay, modifies the tooth and aims to restore the original shape and function of the tooth.
These are called direct restorations, because the dentist provides this treatment directly in the mouth and finishes it in one session.
The most commonly used material nowadays is acrylic/composite which provides a tooth coloured restoration that bonds to the tooth’s remaining structure. There are other material options too, such as amalgam (silver restorations) and glass ionomer which can be also used depending on the clinical situation.
Crowns
When the structural integrity of a tooth has been compromised (fractured or has undergone root canal treatment) the dentist might advise you to have this tooth restored with a restoration that will cover the entire tooth.
Crowns can be made from a range of different materials such as precious and non-precious metals or ceramic (porcelain).
This type of procedure requires at least two appointments and involves impressions and work to be done by a dental technician.
Bridges
Bridges can be used to ‘bridge’ gaps where there are one or multiple missing teeth. Multiple custom-made crowns are attached together and are anchored on teeth that work as abutments and which are able to structurally support the bridge.
Specially designed fixtures will be prepared by the dentist on the abutment teeth to retain the artificial teeth in place. This type of procedure requires at least two appointments and involves impressions and work to be done by a dental technician.
Inlays & Onlays
This type of restorative option is used when there is a need for more extensive reshaping of the whole tooth’s surface or when multiple old fillings on adjacent teeth need replacement.
